Pauliina Siniauer did her Master’s degree at the City University of New York in 2018. Her capstone “Food Plight” was an in-depth investigation about the health violations found in public school cafeterias of New York. She led a team that found out the half of the schools had critical violations and the schools with the worst inspections were some of the city’s poorest students. The story went viral and was cited in more than 20 other medias. The story won IRE Award student category, was selected by the Associated Collegiate Press as Story of the Year, and won a Society of Professional Journalists award.
